Surface Ruptures Associated with the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes in Turkey

von Tamer Y. Duman

This book provides extensive data on the surface ruptures resulting from two large earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, on February 6, 2023. The data were exhaustively gathered through on-site observations, systematic measurements, and advanced remote sensing techniques involving high-resolution image analysis along approximately 550 km of surface ruptures. Key features of the book include: 1) detailed insights into the active tectonic framework of the region where the February 6 earthquakes occurred, 2) a comprehensive characteristics of the East Anatolian Fault zone within the broader context of active tectonics, 3) a thorough analysis of the surface rupture geometry and segmentation pertaining to the earthquakes, 4) surface rupture maps at a scale of 1:2,000, derived from high-resolution lidar and drone imagery combined with digital terrain models data, 5) extensive offset measurements and corresponding change graphs, and 6) visual content, including lidar, drone, and camera images captured in the field along the surface ruptures. The large-scale maps depicting the surface ruptures offer intricate details, including fault complexity, step-overs, en-echelon structures, and deformation zone dimensions. The book provides valuable insights into earthquake-induced deformation, progression, and termination. The volume serves as an indispensable resource for professionals in geoscience, seismology, and engineering seeking to deepen their understanding of these phenomena.

Dr. Duman is a geologist with 34 years of experience in engineering geology. His experience includes geological and geotechnical modeling for infrastructure projects; determining parameters for tunnel designs and geotechnical analyses; active fault mapping; paleoseismological trenching; seismic source characterization; landslide inventory, susceptibility, and hazard assessment; and route and site selection. He has conducted many geological hazards and geotechnical investigations for the design and construction of infrastructure and facility projects abroad. He has been involved in the National Earthquake Strategy and Action Plan in Turkey and has led the project Seismotectonic Maps of Turkey. He has published 32 articles in the SCI- and SCIE-indexed journals and 5 proceedings in English, and 33 articles and proceedings in Turkish. He also has published 10 books and book chapters and many project reports. In addition, he has contributed to the landslide (19), seismotectonic (19), andactive fault (52) maps at regional and national scales.

Dr. Emre is the manager of the Fugro Sial’s Geohazard Division. He was the project leader from 2003 to 2012 and the coordinator for natural disaster related research projects from 1998 to 2003 in the Geology Department of Mineral Research and Exploration of Turkey. He specializes in active fault mapping and characterization, tectonic geomorphology, paleoseismology, aerial photograph interpretation, Quaternary geology, geomorphology, and landslides. His research works were published in numerous scientific journals. He has worked on research projects such as landslide investigation, active fault mapping, paleoseismic trenching, earthquake source characterization, fault rupture hazard, and on-site investigation.
