Strategies for Sustaining Port Competitiveness
Case Studies and New Insights
von Hang Yu
This book highlights innovative strategies and actionable insights to sustain and enhance port competitiveness in an era of unprecedented challenges and transformations in the global supply chain. Drawing on extensive research and real-world case studies, it addresses how ports can adapt to evolving demands, mitigate disruptions, and secure their long-term position as critical nodes in maritime trade and economic development. With a particular focus on Chinese ports and comparison between ports in China and the Europe, it explores the dynamics of port competition and proposes a comprehensive framework for achieving sustainable port competitiveness. It identifies four key dimensions of sustainable port competitiveness—resource-based, platform, network, and sustainable advantages—providing a robust model for understanding and enhancing port performance. These dimensions are systematically examined through a grounded theory approach, informed by 35 in-depth interviews with industry stakeholders, including port operators, shipping lines, cargo forwarders, and service providers.
The book is organized around seven strategies for sustainable competitiveness: attracting investment, forming port alliances, engaging shipping companies, capturing hinterland cargo, optimizing logistics services, developing innovative technologies, and leveraging policy and national strategies. Each strategy is analyzed in depth, offering clear pathways for ports to respond effectively to external pressures such as COVID-19 disruptions, geopolitical trade conflicts, and environmental sustainability imperatives. Key contributions of the book include its introduction of the sustainable port competitiveness framework and the practical application of this framework to current challenges in the maritime sector. By bridging gaps in the literature and focusing on often-overlooked dimensions such as platform and network advantages, the book advances the theoretical landscape of port studies while delivering actionable guidance for practitioners and policymakers.
This book serves as a vital resource for scholars, industry professionals, and policymakers seeking to navigate the complexities of modern port management. It not only equips readers with a deeper understanding of the factors shaping port competitiveness but also provides tools to implement strategies that ensure sustainable growth and global relevance in the maritime sector.
