"Stanzas on the Stars and Sunspots" by Vincenzo Figliucci

Advancing Galileo’s Discoveries in Early Modern Italy

von Beatrice Fazio

This book offers the first critical edition and English translation of Vincenzo Figliucci’s  Stanze sopra le stelle e macchie solari scoperte col nuovo occhiale  (1615), a captivating poetic response to Galileo’s astronomical discoveries. Written by a Jesuit mathematician and moral theologian, this overlooked work reveals how vernacular poetry could illuminate, mediate, and circulate new scientific knowledge in early modern Italy, and how science, in turn, could reshape poetic language, themes, and forms as it sought expression beyond the boundaries of learned discourse. Weaving together inherited cosmological and philosophical frameworks into the cultural, religious, and linguistic debates of its time, Figliucci’s poem uncovers a compelling and little-explored chapter in the intellectual history of the Scientific Revolution.

„A text that fully belongs to the long and contentious chapter of the Galilean cultural battle. A little-known work, long forgotten, which now speaks to us again thanks to the philological and historical work of a young and brilliant scholar.“

—Massimo Bucciantini, Professor of History of Science and Contemporary Italian Literature, University of Siena, Italy

„Lucid and beautifully written, Beatrice Fazio’s edition of Vincenzo Figliucci’s Stanzas on the Stars and Sunspots enriches our understanding of the reception of Galileo’s discoveries amid the tensions of the Counter-Reformation era. Navigating the intersection of literary imagination, scientific knowledge, and intellectual community, the volume ably demonstrates how Figliucci interpreted Galileo’s cosmological discoveries through the lens of vernacular verse at a pivotal moment in the history of science.“

—Meredith K. Ray, Professor of Italian, Johns Hopkins University, US
